How to Decide Whether You Need Braces or Not?

Do you stop yourself from smiling confidently because of misaligned teeth or abnormal spaces in between your teeth? Have you considered braces but are not sure if you are a right candidate? Well, you might be surprised to know that braces are one of the most widely preferred teeth straightening treatments.

Dental problems such as teeth alignment and spacing issues can have a huge impact on your oral as well as overall health. This is because the position of your teeth and jaws affect the way in which your upper and lower teeth come together to form a bite. This in turn determines the rate at which your teeth wear out and also affects your ability to chew correctly.

If you too are confused about whether you need braces or not, take a look at the 4 dental conditions described below. These dental problems indicate the need for braces.

1. Bad Bite

Abnormal alignment of the upper and lower teeth is known as malocclusion. Commonly referred to as bad bite, it can be categorized in the following types:

  • Underbite – When the lower jaw extends too far out, the lower front teeth remain a little in front of the upper teeth. This is known as an underbite. Underbite correction is essential not only for aesthetic reasons, but for better overall health as well.
  • Crossbite – When the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, the person tends to move the lower jaw forward or to the side when closing. The resulting incorrect bite leads to wrong usage of the lower jaw and is known as a crossbite.
  • Overbite – When the upper front teeth extend too far out over the lower front teeth, it is known as an overbite. This may lead to a ‘gummy’ smile, excessive incisor wear and protruding lips.

2. Crooked Teeth

Crowded, crooked or misaligned teeth are very common among all age groups. When the teeth do not have sufficient space to erupt, the teeth may become crowded. Tooth decay, cavities, bad breath, gum diseases are some of the many associated oral problems. Also, crooked or misaligned teeth can be caused due to certain habits such as sucking on thumb or pacifier continually, genetics etc.

3. Space Issues

Abnormal spacing between teeth can be caused due to several reasons such as unusually small teeth, abnormal gum tissue, protruding or impacted teeth, missing teeth due to injury or birth defect etc.

4. Jaw Problems

If your jaw makes sounds or shifts in place, you may have a developmental problem with your jaw. Also, irregular jaw movement due to misaligned teeth can put excessive stress on the muscles and joints of your jaw which may result in Temporomandibular Joint or TMJ disorders.

The conditions listed above can not only make simple actions like brushing, eating and flossing difficult but also lead to issues such as speech disorders, gum diseases, poor digestion etc. Hence, if you have any of these dental conditions, it’s time to consult your dentist.

There are several benefits of teeth straightening. It gives you the confidence to smile freely, reduces the risk of decay, cavities and gum diseases, improves your speech, prevents jawbone erosion etc. A professional dental examination will give you a clear picture about how the braces can give you a healthy and perfect smile!
